A Smart Internet Marketing Strategy: Targeting Niche Markets
The World Wide Web has captivated my attention ever since I was introduced to it by my mother (another WWW freak!). That was about 10 years ago and ever since that time, my interest about all the different things that can be done through the internet has continued to grow.
For the last couple of years, I have been grappling with the idea of making money online. Although I searched and found a lot of information, but most of it was vague and did not give me any concrete answer to the most important question: what to actually DO to make some money on the internet.
During my quest of getting answers, I came across a very informative video on the internet which gave me a lot of information about internet marketing and gave me some pretty good food for thought. The video talked about "Niche Markets"; what they are and why they are important to any person who would like to make money on the internet by selling a product or service. In fact, the concept of Niche Markets is applicable to any business or service provider, whether they operate on the internet or otherwise.
If you look it up in the dictionary, the word "Niche" means "A situation or activity specially suited to a person's interests, abilities, or nature".
A "Niche Market" is a group of people with a common interest or ability or nature, who would all be interested in a common product or service. The common interest of these people can be any thing ranging from a common hobby, a common problem, a common cultural background, to any common desire they might have. Let me explain this to you with a few examples:
1) A niche market of people who have a hobby of scrapbooking
2) A niche market of people who have common problem of lower backache
3) A niche market of people who are all Hispanics
4) A niche market of people who have a common desire of learning plumbing
People with common interests tend to cluster and you can easily find pockets of such people online; in forums and groups or visiting websites of their interest.
It is best to direct your marketing to select niche audiences for maximum benefit to you and to them. It is always a waste of time, effort and resources to market your product or service to a niche audience which is not interested in what you are selling. For example, if you try to sell scrapbooking materials to a niche audience who wants to learn plumbing, you will not get any customers. Granted that you will find a rare plumber who also likes to maintain his scrapbook, but you will not make a profit! Similarly, marketing a new and effective acne product to a group of people with lower backache will only lead you to lose the money you spent on marketing your innovative acne solution to them.
Niche Marketing is very cost effective and powerful; the world's most successful businesses use this concept to maximize their profits.
Therefore, if you have a certain product or service that you want to sell, concentrate your marketing efforts to the Niche Market that it caters too. Conversely, if you do not have a specific product in mind that you want to sell online, it is advisable that you seek out large Niche Markets and then think about what they would be interested in buying and then provide them with that particular solution/product/service.
I wish you great achievements and prosperity in all your endeavors.

The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich
What do you do? Tim Ferriss has trouble answering the question. Depending on when you ask this
controversial Princeton University guest lecturer, he might answer:
“I race motorcycles in Europe.”
“I ski in the Andes.”
“I scuba dive in Panama.”
“I dance tango in Buenos Aires.”
He has spent more than five years learning the secrets of the New Rich, a fast-growing subculture who has abandoned the “deferred-life plan” and instead mastered the new currencies—time and mobility—to create luxury lifestyles in the here and now.
Whether you are an overworked employee or an entrepreneur trapped in your own business, this book is the compass for a new and revolutionary world. Join Tim Ferriss as he teaches you:
• How to outsource your life to overseas virtual assistants for $5 per hour and do whatever you want
• How blue-chip escape artists travel the world without quitting their jobs
• How to eliminate 50% of your work in 48 hours using the principles of a forgotten Italian economist
• How to trade a long-haul career for short work bursts and freuent "mini-retirements"
• What the crucial difference is between absolute and relative income
• How to train your boss to value performance over presence, or kill your job (or company) if it’s beyond repair
• What automated cash-flow “muses” are and how to create one in 2 to 4 weeks
• How to cultivate selective ignorance—and create time—with a low-information diet
• What the management secrets of Remote Control CEOs are
• How to get free housing worldwide and airfare at 50–80% off
• How to fill the void and create a meaningful life after removing work and the office
You can have it all—really.
Customer Review: Great up till about halfway
I am about three quarters way through this book and here are my thoughts. The first half of this book is great almost perfect. Feriss talks about overcoming fear, time management and does so quite effectively. For this reason, this book is worth a read. But, like the two reviewers before me said, about halfway, he starts to talk about outsourcing to find more time to jet set around the globe and creating your 'mule' that is some cash generating business e.g. creating and selling a product over the internet.
In my opinion, the idea of outsourcing to find more time for the fun things in life is quite contradictory and is quite an exaggeration. First of all, someone clearly has to get the work done so you can live the good life - if it's not you it's that guy in India. Well, how about his own good life, do you really think he wants to write a business plan for some greedy American. Perhaps, he could outsource that business plan to Africa for cents/ hour netting him a profit which would allow him to jet set around the world or Asia at the very least. Secondly, do you really think you can take your mind off work and have fun while someone you have never met in India does your work? I think not.
On the topic of creating one's mule, while the reality of life is that most businesses are driven by profit. Preaching the "make a product and sell it" doctrine to the masses is not the way to go. This will only help flood the markets with tons of sub par products from desperate entrepreneurs looking for the golden ticket or should I say mule. And here rises another contradiction, Feriss preaches about outsourcing this and that and doing more in less time, try outsourcing product conceptualization and design and see what margins you get.
Customer Review: Streamlines your work planning
My only regret with this book is not reading it about 10 years ago before I went to university. Readers should not fool themselves into thinking that Tim's methods are a free ride. Far from it. The books explains how it still takes brains, work and some brassy bravado to achieve this kind of working lifestyle. It even gives simple case studies. I liked Tim's easy-read, humorous, simple-to-follow writing and his generosity with information that some of us have been busting our butts to find. Unlike many wealthy people, Tim Ferris appears to actually be enjoying life with fitness studies, dancing, traveling and martial arts. Looks like paradise to me. This book has already saved me time and money.

Customer Review: Fire the Book
I believe some of the advice is fairly good. However is you own a very very small business like I do it doesn't help me. If you check out the 5 star reviews they are from people that help promote his company. You scrath my back I'll scratch yours. Unfortunately, I should have checked them out before I bought the book. Not After! Don't buy it.
Customer Review: BUY THIS BOOK!!!!
I have bought hundreds of business books over the past 25 years and this one is the best. It is amazing to me that so many other books fail to deliver on its promise but this one does. While a lot of the material was a review for me since I have built and sold several business over the years, the advise is "spot on" for anyone just starting out. The focus on sales in chapter 4 should be required reading for anyone in business school.
If you want to run a business, work hard and be successful that is the book for you.
